Project
Vital Repair programme for 315856
The 315 is struggling...
It's no secret. Three years of Welsh weather has not been kind to our beloved unit.
The cabs and saloons have begun to suffer from major water ingress. If the unit continues to deteriorate at the current rate without intervention we could be at serious risk of losing the sole surviving Class 315 in preservation.
...But you can help!
We are delighted to confirm that an agreement has been reached with the railway to allow Driving Motor Standard (DMS) vehicle 64571 to be shunted undercover into the main workshop at Llanelli for a short but intensive period in January 2026. This rare opportunity will allow a structured programme of hands-on work to begin in a controlled environment, something that is not possible while the vehicle is stored outdoors.

Targeted Weatherproofing
During the vehicle's time in the workshop, our volunteers will focus on essential preservation tasks, including investigating and addressing sources of water ingress, undertaking roof-level repairs, carrying out bodyside preparation, and applying protective priming to stabilise the vehicle’s condition.
This work represents a crucial first step in securing the long-term future of the unit and setting the standard for future restoration phases.

£1000
Initial Fundraising Goal
We are also extremely grateful to have up to £500 of match funding already secured from an anonymous donor. This means that for every £1 you donate, £2 will go towards the project, significantly increasing the impact of your support.
To make this fundraiser possible, we are aiming to raise £1,000 to contribute towards the costs of moving the vehicle, hiring and transporting tools and equipment, and purchasing essential materials. These funds will directly enable work on areas of the vehicle that are normally inaccessible, particularly the roof.

Alongside fundraising, we are actively seeking to recruit new volunteers to support Project Yellow Submarine and the wider Class 315 preservation effort.
We welcome people with a broad range of skills and experience, including practical hands-on work such as preparation, basic mechanical or electrical tasks, as well as non-technical roles such as documentation, photography, social media, fundraising support, and general project coordination.
No previous railway experience is required for many roles — enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn are just as valuable. This project is a chance to be part of something tangible from the very beginning and to help shape the future of a unique preserved train.
It's happening... Here's when:
So that's our pitch...now it's over to you.
Project Yellow Submarine is about more than just one week in a workshop — it is about demonstrating what a dedicated volunteer group can achieve, building momentum for the restoration of the entire Class 315 set, and ensuring this iconic commuter unit has a future in preservation. Every contribution, large or small, helps move us one step closer to that goal.
